Ditched
Late Saturday night: Dean and I were driving home after seeing Vanessa. We drop her off in her home town and on our way to ours, we ended up hitting an icy patch and slid into a deep, snow-filled ditch, and barely missing a pole. So here we were in the middle of nowhere, in a 45 degree angle, on a not well travelled country highway and it's -30 degrees celsius outside.

Our attempts to get ourselves out were fruitless. Dean tried to push us out but all it did was make him wet with snow and freeze his legs. He came back into the car and I gave him my leggings to wear while he took his pants off and put them on the dash and allow the heater to dry them. I had brought my snowsuit along so I ended up wearing that. We were able to warm his legs and avoided any kind of hypothermia. He then put his pants overtop of my pants so a least he had two layers. If you're wondering, I had stretchy leggings on and his waist is only two inches bigger than mine, so us swapping pants is realistic.

No cars were passing at all so we were faced with walking somewhere or sitting there the entire night. It would probably take an hour to walk to Vanessa's. So we opted to go to the nearest house. Dean scouts it first, and no answer. He came back and we waited to see if anyone else would drive by.

No one..

After gearing up, we set foot and lucky for us it wasn't too long before we got to a house. We knocked and rang the bell on both doors. No answer again. Should we keep walking and go to Vanessa's? Dean decided to let ourselves in.

Good ol' Canada. If you saw Bowling For Columbine, you might remember a sequence where Michael Moore comes to Canada and opens people's doors because nobody locks them. Well, it's true! There are people that lock them, but not that many! So we let ourselves in. We first try to call Vanessa but she was on the internet so we couldn't get through. We called a tow truck and they said it was a 3-4 hour wait. So we watched some DVDs (Sinbad cartoon and Robin Williams doing stand up) and Dean played with the little kitty that lived there.

The tow truck came and got us out quickly and without hassle. We decided to leave behind a note telling the home owners we were there as well as a bit of cash and three boxes of cookies and chocolates Vanessa's mom gave us.

We didn't end up getting home until 8am. The car is fine. I am fine. Dean has a bit of the sniffles and a cough on Sunday. Sorta sucks because he just got over a flu so being out like that was probably no good for him.

It worked out okay since we had shelter and a phone and were uninjured. Maybe it's my over- positive thinking but honestly, I feel relieved everything turned out okay.
